Ten years ago, paying a retailer for the privilege of receiving your shopping would have sounded mad. Today, most of us hold at least one delivery pass — and some of us hold three without really knowing what they cost per order.
So we did what we do best at ShopWallа: we got the calculator out. Below is the honest break-even maths for every major UK pass in 2025, plus a few thoughts on stacking them without wasting money.
What Exactly Is a Delivery Pass?
In short: a subscription that removes (or reduces) delivery fees on eligible orders. Supermarkets use them to lock in loyalty; you're meant to respond by shopping with them more often. Whether that trade works in your favour depends entirely on how frequently you actually click 'checkout'.
The Break-Even Table
Here's the crucial number for each pass — the point at which it starts saving you money rather than costing you. We've assumed typical delivery fees of £2–£4 per slot, because that's what most of the big four charge.
| Pass | Annual Cost | Break-Even Orders |
|---|---|---|
| Ocado Smart Pass (Anytime) | ~£60 | ~17 orders |
| Ocado Smart Pass (Off-Peak) | ~£40 | ~14 orders |
| Sainsbury's Delivery Pass (Any Day) | ~£80 | ~25 orders |
| Sainsbury's Delivery Pass (Tues–Thurs) | ~£55 | ~20 orders |
| Tesco Delivery Saver (Any Day) | ~£78 | ~24 orders |
| Tesco Delivery Saver (Off-Peak) | ~£58 | ~19 orders |
| Asda Delivery Pass | ~£50 | ~18 orders |
| Amazon Prime (delivery element only) | £89 | ~30+ orders (see below) |
| Iceland Free Delivery | £0 | N/A — always free over £45 |
A couple of honest caveats. Ocado's pass also waives minimum basket charges and gives midweek priority slots, which shifts the maths if your baskets run small. Amazon Prime is the trickiest to assess because groceries are only part of the package — if you use Prime Video and next-day parcels, the £89 is effectively subsidised from several directions.
The Two-Orders-a-Week Rule of Thumb
Most annual passes cost between £40 and £90. At an average dodged delivery fee of £3, you need roughly 14 to 30 orders a year to break even — in other words, one to two deliveries a month is the danger zone, and one a week puts you comfortably ahead.
If you're ordering fortnightly or less, don't buy a pass. Full stop. Pay per slot and pocket the difference.
Stacking Passes Without Wasting Money
Here's where savvy shoppers can genuinely win. There's no rule saying you can't hold two passes — and the sweet spot is pairing one big-shop pass with one top-up option:
- Ocado Anytime + Iceland free delivery: Ocado for the weekly haul, Iceland for frozen fill-ins at no extra cost.
- Tesco Off-Peak + Amazon Prime: midweek Tesco slots for the main shop, Prime for everything else in your life.
- Asda Pass + Aldi: Asda delivers the branded staples; Aldi handles the cheap fresh stuff in person.
The trap to avoid is holding two passes from the same tier. Two £80 supermarket passes means you need 50 combined orders a year — that's near-weekly commitment to both stores, which almost nobody actually does.
The Quiet Price Creep
Worth flagging: these fees have drifted upward. Sainsbury's Any Day pass sat at £60 a few years back; it's now around £80. The break-even order count rises with every increase, so the pass you bought in 2022 might no longer be the bargain it was. Check your renewal email properly before auto-renewing — that's the single easiest £80 some readers will save this year.
Our Verdict
For weekly online shoppers, a delivery pass remains one of the few genuinely straightforward savings in UK retail — no vouchers to clip, no apps to check. For everyone else, the per-order fee is the fairer deal. Work out your honest delivery frequency (not the aspirational one), divide it into the pass price, and let that number decide.
